RRJ Early Career Professional Learning Series

Many graduate and professional programs do an exceptional job preparing their students with core knowledge and skills needed for success in their career paths. However, programs often neglect or struggle to help their students develop other necessary skills students that are often unaware they need until they have entered their chosen careers. For many early career (and experienced) professionals, developing these other skills can be the difference between building a strong foundation for enduring professional success in their chosen career, and leaving their career behind due to underperformance, lack of job satisfaction, or burnout.

How can you develop much needed knowledge, understanding, and skills to help advance your career and build a foundation for success?

Join the Vanderbilt University Initiative for Race Research and Justice (RRJ) for its Early Career Professional Learning Series. The Series is designed to support those interested in deepening their knowledge, understanding, skills, and practices in interrelated areas that are critical for future professional success.

November 11- Writing  and  Publishing Across Genres

December 2 - Wellness, Healing and Mindfulness

Teaching and Mentoring

This session is designed to focus on (1) teaching in colleges and universities and (2) strategies for effective mentoring.

As anti-diversity and equity efforts increase, instructors whose courses center, and address race, racism, and equity must develop and revise their courses in challenging climates. This session is designed to support participants as they work to design and adapt their courses. Special attention will be placed on course descriptions, syllabi development, prioritizing assignments, reading selections, assessment practices, online platforms, and grading practices.

Early career scholars rarely are provided with tools to help them learn how to become effective mentors. This session is designed to help early career scholars build mentoring relationships and practices with students and colleagues across disciplines.

Grant Writing, Philanthropy, and Fundraising

This session is designed to focus on (1) writing successful grants, (2) building strong relationships with philanthropic and other grant organizations, and (3) strategies for effective fundraising.

As the work of equity remains essential in our increasingly diverse nation, this session is designed to help participants develop knowledge and skills necessary to develop successful grant and fundraising efforts. Special attention will be placed on what funding agencies expect to see in successful grant proposals, particularly those with an equity focus.

Early career scholars will learn processes for developing successful proposals and what grant organizations often look for in proposals.

In addition, this session provides insights about how to build relationships and philanthropic efforts through fundraising for research, teaching, and broader equity initiatives.

Writing and Publishing Across Genres

This session is designed to assist early career professionals with constructing knowledge to disseminate in different publication venues.

Participants will learn how to develop manuscripts across different genres, such as scholarly research publications (for journals and books) and research - to -policy and practice publications, such as opinion essays, policy briefs, blog posts, etc.

Special attention will be placed on the development of these products with an equity focus.

Wellness, Healing, and Mindfulness

This session is designed to help early career scholars build wellness, healing, and mindfulness practices that sustain them for successful and meaningful careers.

Those who focus on race and other aspects of justice and equity are often asked to serve on more committees than others, to support the mental and psychological health of minoritized students and colleagues, and to engage in layers of invisible work in their professional and personal lives. This session is designed to help early career scholars with work/life balancing and mental, psychological, and physical well-being.

Special attention will be placed on how early career scholars model wellness, healing, and mindfulness for a new cadre of professionals.

Price for each session individually:

$200- Full Time Student

Dr. Rich Milner founded the Initiative for Race Research and Justice (RRJ) in the fall of 2018. His goal was to centralize and bring together research and researchers focused on race inside and outside the field of education. RRJ has an overt emphasis on studying and impacting practices and policies toward racial justice. For instance, how do we build from innovative, interdisciplinary race research to improve the human condition?

Since 2018, the initiative has expanded under the collaboration and support of Dr. Wonder Drake and Dr. Graham Reside.

In short, RRJ’s work is organized around three main focal areas: (1) conducting high quality research on race; (2) using new and expanded knowledge to improve practices, policies, society, and the overall human condition; and (3) sharing and disseminating knowledge, resources, and tools in collaboration with communities, organizations, and institutions for racial justice.
